Strategies for Productivity and Accountability

Updated: Apr 30

In addition to accountability buddies, there are some other ways that you can incorporate others into your goal setting and achievement.

Often times, clients tell me that they are more likely to follow through when someone on the outside pushes or motivates them on a deadline or goal. Ideally, we would like to exercise that muscle of being able to get motivated internally AND externally, but there are legitimate reasons why it may feel more difficult to get started alone.

Executive dysfunction, dopamine, the cycle of hyper-focus and burnout, as well as environmental and developmental factors all contribute to why a person may find themselves more successful when involving others.
  1. Accountability Buddies:

  • May be used when your "buddy's" values are similar to yours

  • Can include sharing specific details of your goals and progress

  • Consists of independent work sessions

  1. Co-working Sessions:

  • Usually has a host or leader for a small group (think, study sessions)

  • Consists of scheduled breaks, sometimes using visual timers to support this

  • Facilitates working in the presence of others

Lastly, and I highly recommend this for neurodivergent folks or people with ADHD;
  1. Body Doubles:

  • "Body doubling is when someone is in the same physical space as the person working on tasks- the body double doesn't necessarily need to be working; they just need to be present..." (Inflow) so the other person has someone around as they are working on a more difficult or less-desired task.

  • Usually involves only 2 people

All of these features can find themselves present in activities like Academic Coaching or working with a therapist or life coach.
