At KWR practices, these are the distinctions we use to differentiate between life coaching and therapy services:

Goals

Therapy sessions are generally more open-ended, whereas coaching sessions are more focused.

With a life coach, you might work on discovering your passions, strategizing a path to achieving them, and building the positive mindset that will empower you to achieve them.

As a client in therapy, you may choose broader, longer-term goals such as reducing symptoms of anxiety or depression, or improving self-esteem.

Duration

Coaching is usually short term, while therapy is usually long term.

It takes time for a therapist to build rapport with a client and to explore the inner workings of the client's conscious and subconscious mind. Some clients may work with a mental health therapist for years. Typically, a life coach works with the same client for as long as it takes that person to reach their goals.

Focus

Therapy focuses on mental health and emotional healing, whereas life coaching focuses on setting and achieving goals.

Cost

Due to the nature of credentialing and experience that is necessary for individuals to provide individual therapy, therapy is more costly. Depending on the therapist's license and paneling with insurance companies, therapy sessions may also be covered through insurance.

Gains

In therapy, you will address mental and emotional health challenges you're facing by learning therapy techniques that may include: cognitive reframing and mindfulness skills, gaining insights into how your past affects you today, and improved processing and healing of traumatic experiences. Success in therapy is measured by things like improved mood, lower or depression anxiety levels, and a greater sense of happiness.

Life coaching teaches you how to achieve big dreams and/or break free if you feel stuck in your life's journey.

The owner of KWR Practices, Kimberly Wilson, has over a decade of experience working in a behavioral hospital setting, community mental health, school districts, and private practice. Kim decided to expand her reach to clients who are a part of all of the communities and settings that she has previously served. Starting her own business has allowed her to ignite the passion and excitement of meeting folks from all backgrounds, locations, and needs and providing her skills and expertise to help them identify and expand their potential!

Kim received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Quincy University and a Master of Science in Education for Clinical Mental Health from Northern Illinois University (CACREP-Accredited). She holds a Professional Educator License with endorsements in Reading, LBS1, ESL, Language Arts, and Social Sciences. She is certified in Trauma-Informed Counseling through NIU, is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of IL.
